Thai cuisine is famous worldwide — bold spice, balance, and flavour in every bite. Around Ao Nang you'll find plenty to eat, but the most memorable meals usually sit a little further from the beach. A scooter turns "too far for a taxi" into an easy evening ride.
Thai food is one of the most celebrated cuisines on the planet — known for its variety of flavours, its heat, and the way sweet, sour, salty and umami show up in the same bowl.
Done well, it is not just spicy for the sake of it. A good Thai kitchen balances fresh herbs, citrus, chili and slow-built curries so every dish feels complete — not a one-note tourist plate of pad thai.
Krabi Province has excellent seafood, southern curries, market snacks and family-run shops. The trick is knowing where to go — and having the freedom to get there on your own schedule.
Beach roads and hotel zones around Ao Nang are convenient — but the menu often skews toward a simpler, safer palette aimed at visitors who may not want full heat or unfamiliar dishes.
If you want to experience Thai food the way locals eat it, you usually need to leave the main tourist strip. The nearest genuinely local neighbourhoods from Ao Nang beach are only about 4–5 kilometres away — close on a scooter, awkward without one.
The further you ride from the dense hotel area, the better the odds of finding kitchens that cook for regulars rather than tour buses. Quality goes up. Prices often go down. The experience feels more real.

This restaurant is still located in the heart of the tourist area, so it is a more expensive place — but the design and build of the restaurant and the view it offers are really quite stunning and well worth a visit while you are on holiday here.

What makes it special
A freshwater river runs around the dining area — guests can swim
This is a very nice restaurant a little outside the main tourist area. The attraction is a river that runs right along the perimeter of the restaurant — a cold, fresh-water river that is very refreshing to swim in. Palm trees and tropical forest surround you as you swim and dine. A unique, easy-going spot we highly recommend.

Sunset views over islands — one of the most scenic rides in the area
This restaurant is on our list for two reasons. First, it is about a thirty-minute ride from downtown Ao Nang. Second — and just as important — that ride is one of the most scenic and beautiful you can take in the area. Plan it as an end-of-day destination: stop at cafés, coffee shops and open-air markets along the way, then finish at Khao Thong Hill. The restaurant sits high on the mountainside facing west, with islands spread across the horizon. Sunsets here are unforgettable.

What makes it special
Old wooden house design in a working rice plantation
This is probably our favourite restaurant in the area, hands down. The setting is inside a small rice plantation. The restaurant is built with wood, bamboo, hardwood and softwood throughout — the name means "old wooden house" in Thai, and they have captured that spirit in every detail. The food is some of the best authentic southern Thai cooking you will find. Very popular with Thai locals and can fill up — we recommend calling ahead to check there is space.
Eastern Krabi — Isan cuisine · Approx. 25–30 min by scooter
We have been coming here for over a decade and have never been let down. Quality is consistently excellent, dishes arrive fast, and the variety is hard to beat. The style is Isan — northeastern Thai — rather than traditional southern Thai: pork, catfish, sticky rice, and dry meat and vegetable salads instead of curries and soups. Not everyone's cup of tea, but well worth trying to experience the breadth of Thai food in one small country.
Good food in Krabi is rarely more than thirty minutes away on a scooter — but it can feel unreachable if you depend on taxis or the nearest beach-front menu.
