Police in Krabi and riding safety

A scooter is a great way to see Krabi. Police in Krabi do stop riders from time to time — usually to check helmets and licences. This is the same advice we give customers before they leave the shop.

The main rule of thumb: ride slow.

Why this matters

Riding here can feel easier than at home — lighter traffic in places, warm weather, and roads that are often in better condition than visitors expect. That relaxed feeling is exactly why people get caught out.

Most problems we see are not mysterious mechanical failures. They come from going too fast, assuming a junction is clear, or skipping the helmet because nobody stopped you yesterday.

Police in Krabi are not on every corner, but they do set up checkpoints — near town, on the airport road, and on busy tourist routes. Some days you will not see anyone. The next day there is a roadblock. Ride as if a stop is possible, and a real stop is usually over in a minute.

Police in Krabi stop scooter riders mainly to check two things: a helmet on your head, and a licence you are allowed to use. You might hit a fixed roadblock, or an officer may wave you down. That happens more often in high season and after public holidays.

Wear your helmet with the strap done up — not hanging on the mirror. It is the first thing officers look for, and it is also the thing most likely to protect you in a fall. Riding without one can mean a fine. Worse, it can mean a serious injury on a road with little room to recover.

Keep your driving licence and passport or ID somewhere easy to reach. Visitors should also carry an International Driving Permit for the class of bike they are riding, together with their home licence. They may ask to see both. If you rented from us, keep the booking confirmation on your phone.

When you see a checkpoint, slow down early, stay calm, and follow instructions. Most stops are quick if you are wearing a helmet and have your papers. If something is unclear, ask politely. Arguing on the roadside almost never helps.

Do not take your cue from other tourists riding without helmets. That is not a green light. The people who stay out of trouble are the ones who wear a helmet every time, ride sober, and can show their documents.

Helmets first — then the rest of the gear

Every rental from Krabi Moto Rentals includes a standard helmet. Wear it on every ride, including a five-minute hop to the shop. Most serious head injuries happen on familiar roads at low speed, not only on long highway runs. A missing helmet is also the fastest way to get pulled over.

If you want more coverage, we can add a premium full-face helmet, gloves, and a jacket when you book. A jacket helps with sun, dust, and insects, and it gives you something between your skin and the road if you have to put a foot down or slide.

Flip-flops and bare arms are common on holiday. They are a poor idea on a bike. Closed shoes and long trousers make longer rides more comfortable — and they look a lot better if you are asked to pull over.

A few rules that actually matter here

Use the same common sense you would at home, then add a little extra caution. Other riders can look very relaxed. The posted rules still apply, and police in Krabi can still stop you.

Ride slow
This is the golden rule. If something happens, you need room to stop. Krabi's roads often have little margin for error — slow speed gives you time to react.

Always wear your helmet
Secure the strap. A missing helmet is the most common reason people get fined at a checkpoint. Ask us for a different size if yours does not fit.

Check your mirrors before every turn
Look left and right before turning — another bike or car may be coming up quickly behind you, especially in town.

Look both ways at every merge
Riders sometimes use the wrong side of the road. If you only look one way when joining a road, you can merge straight into oncoming traffic.

Obey line markings
A double yellow line means no passing. A single dashed yellow line means passing is allowed when safe.

Respect posted speed limits
Limits are posted for a reason. Even when nobody is watching, choose a speed you can actually stop from.

Extra slow at night
Dogs, cats, goats, and large monitor lizards use the roads after dark. Ride well below daytime speeds and use your high beam only when it will not dazzle others.

Common situations on the road

These are the issues we talk about most often with customers — and the ones worth preparing for before you ride.

Flat tyres

Road surfaces in Krabi are generally very good, but punctures still happen — often from nails, sharp stones, or worn tyres on longer rentals.

If you get a flat: get off the bike and push it if you can. You may ride very slowly — around 10 km/h — only to reach a nearby shop. Tyre repair shops are everywhere in Thailand; repairs usually take no more than 30 minutes and cost at most around 300 baht, depending on the bike and tyre type.

Riders on the wrong side

It is common to see motorcycles using the wrong side of the road, especially on quieter stretches or when someone is looking for a turn-off.

At every junction and merge, look both directions — not only the way traffic is supposed to come. Treat blind merges as two-way until you have confirmed both sides are clear.

Animals at night

Stray dogs, cats, goats, and large lizards move onto roads after dark, often without warning.

Reduce speed, use your horn lightly if needed, and assume something may run out from the verge. If you are not confident riding at night, plan to finish your ride before sunset.

Speed and stopping distance

If anything unexpected happens — a dog, a car pulling out, gravel — you need to stop quickly. At higher speeds there is often not enough room on the road to brake safely, which is how minor situations become accidents.

Ride at a speed where you could stop within the distance you can see. When in doubt, slow down further.

Take your time

We want people to enjoy riding here. The beaches, viewpoints, and food stops are better when you are not rushing.

Wear your helmet, keep your documents handy, and expect to see police in Krabi once in a while. If you are prepared, a checkpoint is usually a short pause rather than a spoiled afternoon.
