A long but rewarding exploration up the coast from Krabi into Phang Nga Province — nature reserves, peaceful countryside, and some of the most impressive temple grounds in the region. Start early, take your time at each stop, and do not leave the ride home too late.

Why this ride is worth the distance

This itinerary takes you north along the coast from Krabi into Phang Nga — through limestone mountains, palm plantations and quiet countryside that most beach-holiday visitors never see.

Four stops break the journey into manageable legs: a mangrove nature reserve, a peaceful lake with a floating bridge, Wat Bang Rieng, and the stunning modern grounds of Wat Bang Tong.

It is a wonderful experience for anyone who loves Buddhist temples and wants to see everyday life away from the main tourist strip — but treat it as a full, serious riding day. We recommend starting as early as you can so you are not coming back in the very late evening.

Clear forest stream and boardwalk at Tha Pom Khlong Song Nam, Phang Nga

Stop 1

Tha Pom Khlong Song Nam (Tapom Kongsongnam)

Your first stop is Tha Pom Khlong Song Nam — a mangrove forest estuary and nature reserve where freshwater meets the sea in strikingly clear channels.

Monitor lizards and mangrove snakes are often seen here. They are not dangerous, but they are beautiful — keep your eyes open as you arrive. The park is a national park, less travelled and cheaper than many — budget around 50 baht per person and bring cash.

The drive out alone is almost worth the trip: limestone mountains, natural palm plantations, and some of the most iconic scenery in the province.

Stop 2

Khao Kham Dam

A little further north, Khao Kham Dam is a large body of water in a very quiet, open landscape — a floating bridge you can ride onto leads to a small pagoda in the middle of the lake.

An ideal place to sit and have lunch in peace. It is rarely busy — do not expect crowds. There are plenty of spots under trees for a picnic if you prefer to eat off the bike.

Pack lunch or snacks — there is little nearby if you want to avoid backtracking
Take your time — this is a good mid-morning breather

Stop 3

Wat Bang Rieng

Wat Bang Rieng is one of the more famous and historic temples in the area — important to local Buddhist worshippers and well worth an hour or two exploring the grounds, plaques and information booths.

As you approach, you may see an iconic Chinese goddess statue in the distance from the main temple grounds — a striking first impression before you enter.

The temple sits deep in the countryside, surrounded by some of the most beautiful nature in the region. Allow time to walk the grounds properly rather than a quick photo stop.

Dress code: cover shoulders and knees — for men and women. Revealing shoulders or kneecaps is considered offensive in temple culture
Remove shoes where required and speak quietly near prayer areas

Stop 4

Wat Bang Tong

The final temple on this tour — Wat Bang Tong — was completed around 2015 and is relatively recent compared with the older sites you have seen. The main feature is a massive obelisk-style tower, almost Aztec in feel, surrounded by numerous smaller buildings with detailed paintings across the entire complex.

Like other Buddhist temple grounds in Thailand, entry is free. The scale and attention to detail make it a breathtaking sight — one of the highlights of the whole day.

There is a café on site if you are tired by this point and want a sandwich or coffee before the ride back. Highly recommended for anyone exploring beyond the main tourist attractions.

Planning the ride home

This is a long day — a good 70 km each way, with heavy riding and many stops. The stops break up the travel, but you still do not want to be heading back in the very late evening.

We strongly recommend starting as early as possible and keeping an eye on the clock after Wat Bang Tong. Ride slow and careful on the return — rural roads can be dark earlier than you expect, and fatigue catches up after a full day in the saddle.
